Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging Announces Appointment of New CEO, Greg Zars, as Mike Donohue Retires

Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging (NEI3A) is pleased to announce the appointment of Greg Zars as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective August 1, 2025. Greg will succeed current CEO Mike Donohue, who will retire at the end of July.
Greg Zars brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of NEI3A’s mission, having joined the agency in 2012. Over the past thirteen years, he has held several leadership roles, most recently serving as Deputy Director. In that role, Greg was instrumental in strengthening program operations, advocating for older adults, and advancing the agency’s person-centered approach to aging services.
“I’m honored to step into the role of CEO and continue the vital work NEI3A does to support older Iowans and their caregivers,” said Zars. “Mike’s leadership has laid a strong foundation, and I look forward to building on that success with our dedicated team and community partners.”
In addition to this leadership transition, Kristie Wiltgen will assume the role of Chief Operating Officer. Kristie brings extensive experience and a deep commitment to the agency’s mission, and her promotion ensures continued organizational strength and stability.
Mike Donohue’s retirement marks the end of an impactful chapter at NEI3A. Since becoming CEO, Mike has guided the agency through periods of growth and transformation, consistently focusing on enhancing the quality of life for aging adults. In addition to his role at NEI3A, Mike has been deeply engaged in the broader community. He served on the Dubuque Racing Association/Gaming Board since 2014, holding the position of Board Chair for part of his tenure. He also contributed at the national level as an alternate board member for USAging, advocating for the needs of older Americans.
Reflecting on his time at NEI3A, Donohue shared: “This adventure has truly been the perfect capstone to my working career. I’ve been blessed to find a mission-driven opportunity where I could share my experience and, in the process, feel a profound sense that my work has made a difference. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished together.”
“Mike’s leadership, compassion, and vision have made a significant difference, both within our organization and across northeast Iowa,” said Jacob Bates, Chair of the NEI3A Board of Directors. “We are grateful for his service and excited for Greg to lead us into the future.”
NEI3A serves older adults and caregivers across 18 counties in northeast Iowa. With Greg Zars at the helm, the agency is well-positioned to continue delivering innovative, inclusive, and responsive aging services to the communities it supports.
